The goal of the New Beginnings (Young Parents) Support Program
is to provide intensive support, education with pre and postnatal-care,
community referrals, advocacy, practical parenting skills and tasks of
independent living and relationship building. The Young Parents Program strives
to increase the potential and independence of young parents by strengthening
their parenting skills as a means of healthy development of children and their
families in the community. Clients can be assisted with court and legal procedures,
child custody protection orders from the Ministry of Children and Family Development,
spousal and sexual abuse issues as well as financial and poverty issues, food
security, self esteem and asset building. The Young Parents program benefits from
many partnerships with local resources in the community.
A twice weekly postnatal group co-facilitated by the Young Parents Program and
the Creating Healthy Families Program provide a healthy lunch and topics of value
such as: nutrition and self-care, budgeting, infant safety, commuinty resources, parenting/life
strategies, birth control and abuse prevention. The Young Parents Program also includes
one to one outreach where the worker meets with the client on a regular basis offering
intensive support and hands-on delivery of parenting and life skills. Weekly telephone contact
is maintained with every client. The Young Parents Program also offers a once weekly family
playgroup where interaction and play is encouraged between parents and children, a small snack
is provided as well as transportation.
Clients are typically referred through Family Services Baby's Best Chance Program,
Creating Healthy Families, Carihi Secondary School, Ministry of Children and Family Development,
friends or community partners.
